Dan Barker created The Way Bible Study and used it to baptize hundreds of souls. This platform exists so that work continues.
In January 2024, Dan Barker passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.
He spent his life sharing the gospel with anyone who would sit down and listen. He believed that leading others to Christ was not the job of preachers alone, but the calling of every person who follows Jesus. This platform is our way of honoring that conviction and making sure his life's work keeps going.
Sharing the Good News wasn't just for preachers, but a joyful calling for every single person who follows Jesus.
Dan came to faith through his wife, Gay. She guided him to Christ when he was 21 years old in Owensboro, Kentucky. That experience never left him. He knew exactly what it felt like to have someone care enough to sit down and walk through the scriptures with him, and he spent the rest of his life doing the same for others.
He baptized hundreds of people using this exact study. Kitchen tables, living rooms, wherever someone was willing to listen. Dan did the study in person, and no one did it better. So we recorded him teaching it — the same way he had always done it — so that his approach could be multiplied and his work could reach people he never had the chance to sit down with himself.
"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works."
Dan used to say he wasn't trying to build a curriculum. He was trying to stir people up. To get everyday Christians off the sidelines and actually doing the work of evangelism.
Dan never positioned himself as the expert. Even after years of leading people to Christ, he still showed up to every conversation with his yellow pad, ready to take notes and learn something new. He genuinely believed he was still a work in progress, and he said so often.
He was most interested in the people who were out there actually doing it. Not the theologians. The regular church members who had figured out how to invite their neighbor over, or bring it up with a coworker, or sit down with a family member who had questions. Those were the people he wanted to learn from and connect with.
2 Timothy 2:2 mattered a lot to him: "commit these things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." He believed the gospel spread best when ordinary believers passed it on to the people right in front of them.
Dan did not get to see this platform built. He passed away in January 2024 before it came together. But everything here is his. The videos, the scripture references, the discussion questions, the whole structure of how a study leader walks someone through the gospel. He developed all of it over decades of doing this work by hand.
The goal of this platform is simple: take what Dan built and put it in the hands of every church that wants to use it. Give Bible Study Leaders the tools to do what Dan did, at scale, with the support they need to track progress, stay connected with their students, and never let someone fall through the cracks.
Dan would have wanted his study in as many hands as possible. That is what we are trying to do.
Dan baptized hundreds of souls with this study. He is gone, but the harvest is not. Bring The Way to your church and keep the work going.
